Donation placed in remembrance of Sylvia Motherwell (nee Boyes) and Lindsay Motherwell

Picture
Sylvia was born in 1939 in Kensington, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. This was during World War 2 when times were incredibly difficult for everyone.
Sylvia lost her parents at a very early age and was reared in the Leliebloem House Orphanage from about 2 years of age. Apart from the education she received, the Orphanage also provided speech and drama, as well as dancing lessons, all of which Sylvia loved. She remained at the Orphanage until the age of 18. Thereafter she entered the employ of a well known fashion designer as housekeeper, who lived in Hof Street, Cape Town, where Sylvia also resided.
In 1966 Sylvia joined the Eoan Group, an amateur opera company. The Group was established for the social and cultural upliftment of the lesser privileged members of the South African community. She met her lifelong friend Trevor Pretorius there, and together they participated in many operatic concerts, operas and American musicals.
During the run of the Roger and Hammerstein musical "South Pacific" at Cape Towns's Alhambra Theatre, Sylvia's life changed forever. She met the love of her life, Lindsay Motherwell, an Australian musician in the accompanying orchestra. Romance blossomed between them. Lindsay was a keen jazz musician and talented drummer who had spent some years working in South Africa.
The South African Government of the day had adopted  many draconian laws, and mixing and marrying across the colour line was strictly prohibited and arrests were often carried out by the  police, even if a mixed couple just held hands or were known to be together alone. When Sylvia visited Lindsay in his apartment he had to have a maids uniform handy in case the Police knocked on the door.
Lindsay & Sylvia were very much in love & realised that if they wanted a life together they would have to leave South Africa.  They eventually made their way to London where they were married before deciding to return to Lindsay’s home country of Australia to live in the early 1970’s.
On the journey from London to Australia the ship they migrated on called the "Fairsky", called at Cape Town for a few hours en route to Australia from the UK.  Lindsay was forbidden by the authorities to go ashore with his wife to visit their friends, including Trevor and David Berry. When the ship came alongside the quay at about midnight Trevor and David shouted across the water .."Sylvia"! - and her high pitched voice came back to them to say she was glad to be back in her home country.
Lindsay was a successful musician in Australia and he and Sylvia enjoyed a happy life there.
Sylvia loved Australia, and she loved her home country South Africa, and they both visited South Africa several times over the years, until ill health made it difficult for Sylvia to undertake the journey.
Both Sylvia & Lindsay have passed away and hopefully their memory will live on through the donation in both their names to assist the children of Leliebloem House.
